John TS #20-21

Date/Time: September 30th  Saturday 2:00pm-4:30pm. Tuttee: Ye-Won. Location: Hecht House. Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking. Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s understanding of constellations and the idea of stars as introduced in a book that we went over. I also corrected her understanding of descriptive words such as different hair colors and patterns with words such as "blond," "brunette," and "plaid." I also corrected her understanding of words such as "misty" and "lapping." The session was cut short unfortunately due to the tutee injuring herself with a chair. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: In my time tutoring Ye-won, I have seen such a great improvement in not only her but also myself. I am glad to say that even though my sessions as a part of the TEFL certification are over, I will continue to keep tutoring her into the future. I think that the tools I experimented with and the strategies I...

Date/Time: September 25th  Monday 1:00pm-3:00pm. Tuttee: Ye-Won. Location: Hecht House. Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking. Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s ability to comprehend a story when reading at an accelerated pace. I corrected her understanding of onomatopoeia words such as "woof". I used crossword puzzles to correct her understanding of key vocabulary found in the books that were gone over and used these puzzles to evaluate her ability to understand the book as a whole with the hints being given in the context of the book. The rate of progression has been good and I can see noticeable improvements as the weeks go on with the reading speed and comprehension.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I did go over a book the tutee was assigned again but I tried to change the way I went over the book so the student would understand the book more which I think was a great way to conduct this session. I tried tying the topics of the book wi...

Date/Time: September 17th  Sunday 3:00pm-5:00pm. Tuttee: Ye-Won. Location: Hecht House. Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking. Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s reading speed and understanding of words that are difficult to read quickly. I corrected the tutee's reading comprehension when reading quickly and helped develop strategies for demonstrating comprehension of key terms and the book's plot. I had the student learn the importance of crossword puzzles as a tool to measure vocabulary familiarity that she will see a lot in the future. I also corrected the tutee's understanding of descriptions such as "drooping" and "sickly".  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: In this lesson I had the student go over a book that her teacher assigned her for homework. After going through the book quickly, I did a lot of vocabulary practice that included an introduction to crossword puzzles. She did very well with the puzzle and I should...

Date/Time: August 29th @11:45am w/ YeonHee Location: Hopkins Eatery Topic: Wrapping up the summer Summary: In this session, we took time to go over everything that we have covered so far and the different things that emphasis was placed on. As we got to go over everything this gave me the chance to evaluate her strengths, weaknesses, and overall growth. I noticed that she responded the best to learning new challenging things such as idioms and American culture. However she was always willing to do any work that I promoted as beneficial to her growth. Her usage of certain idioms and terminology have improved over time as well as her comfort in expressing herself. Breaking down this barrier was a big goal of mine because I wanted to be able to create a conducive learning environment that allowed her to be who she was and express her thoughts as she pleased.  Lessons Learned: Today, I learned that it is good to take a step back and look at the progress that someone has gradually made....

Date: 30th August 2023 Tutee: Marcela Summary:  I feel confident in Marcela's understanding of the present tenses in English, so today we did some listening exercises. I didnt want to overwhelm her by moving straight on to past or future tesne, so I thought one more lesson of review and practice would be useful. Especially because we live together, so I will always be able to teach her so to me there is no use in overwhelming her right now, and there's no deadline. I want to go at a pace that suits her best. We watched a level-appropriate video together and then I gave her some prompts so we could discuss it, this took up the rest of our time. She is improving very quickly! During the next lesson, I plan to introduce the past tenses and incorporate more reading exercises. She also does a lot of practice in her free time so I will give her reading and listening material to use during.

Date: 29th August 2023 Tutee: Marcela Summary:  Today's lesson was a review of the present tenses in English. I started off by giving Marcela a level appropriate text to read that incorporated the different tenses. I read first and then she read the text, afterwards we reviewed any vocabulary the she didn't understand and pronunciation mistakes. She did a pretty good job with this, I think the text was very level appropriate, it challenged her just enough. The text was about daily routines so afterwards I asked her to create sentences describing her own daily routines. After giving her 10 minutes to do so, we reviewed the sentences for any mistakes. After that we had ran out of time. I am proud of her progress!

Date: 28th August 2023 Tutee: Marcela Summary: Today, Marcela and I continued our review Present Perfect tense. Since it's been a few days since our last lesson I did a quick review of Present Perfect and had her create some sentences using the tense. Then we moved on to Present Perfect Continuous. She had a bit more trouble with this one than the others so I made sure to go over it again slowly and provided other examples in context. She's improving really quickly, during her free time I see her using apps like Duolingo to practice her English and whenever we talk she always incorporates English. I have been actively trying to code-switch between Spanish and English whenever we're discussing something I know she could figure out the meaning of in the context of a Spanish sentence. She's been doing really great! I'll include a snippet of the lesson plan below.  Present Perfect Continuous: Introduce the present perfect continuous tense by explaining that it is use...
