Summary:

Today, Marcela and I continued our review Present Perfect tense. Since it's been a few days since our last lesson I did a quick review of Present Perfect and had her create some sentences using the tense. Then we moved on to Present Perfect Continuous. She had a bit more trouble with this one than the others so I made sure to go over it again slowly and provided other examples in context. She's improving really quickly, during her free time I see her using apps like Duolingo to practice her English and whenever we talk she always incorporates English. I have been actively trying to code-switch between Spanish and English whenever we're discussing something I know she could figure out the meaning of in the context of a Spanish sentence. She's been doing really great! I'll include a snippet of the lesson plan below.

Present Perfect Continuous:

  • Introduce the present perfect continuous tense by explaining that it is used to talk about ongoing actions that started in the past and continue in the present.
    • The present perfect continuous tense is used to talk about ongoing actions that started in the past and continue up to the present moment. It emphasizes the duration or length of time an action has been happening. For example, "I have been studying English for two hours" means that I started studying two hours ago and I am still studying now. In this tense, we use the auxiliary verb "have" (has for third-person singular) + "been" + the present participle form of the main verb + "ing" ending.
  • Provide examples of present perfect continuous tense sentences on the board.
    1. I have been studying English for two hours.
    2. They have been playing video games since morning.
    3. She has been waiting for the bus for 30 minutes.
    4. We have been working on this project all week.
    5. He has been painting the walls since yesterday.
  • Engage in a short dialogue with the student, asking questions and prompting them to respond using present perfect continuous tense. Ask her to make example sentence.
  • Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in present perfect continuous tense: a. I ________________ (study) for three hours. b. They ________________ (play) soccer since morning. c. She ________________ (wait) for the bus for half an hour. d. We ________________ (work) on this project all week. e. He ________________ (paint) the walls since yesterday.
