Jessica TS #7 (Jewon)
Date/time: July 10th, 8-9am
Location: Online
Topic/Skill: Starting the lesson was a little difficult due to the language barrier, but I tried to make it fun and lower Jewon's affective filter with a silly ESL game. We each took a turn describing an animal while the other person drew it based on the description. The results were pretty funny, and I think it helped break the ice and gave him some practice with basic descriptions in English, in addition to making it communicative. I allowed him to use the internet for descriptions he struggled with (like the English word for "muzzle").
We then read an article about video games in English together. I had him read sentences after me to practice pronunciation, and then we discussed the article after. I had some trouble helping him understand the discussion questions, so I may need to reexamine how I approach this type of activity in the future. But he seemed to enjoy the ESL game, so I'll continue doing them if it helps him find English more enjoyable (his mom told me he's not interested in it, so that's a priority for me).
What I learned: I feel more confident working with him and have a better understanding of his speaking level. I think speaking will be our biggest priority since he's already learning grammar in school and seems shy about speaking, but I'll also try to help him with the "knowledge" side of things when the need arises.
