Today I observed Dr. Ciappetta's 4B Reading class. I nearly went to a wrong classroom again, but managed to realize my mistake before the class started.

While the last class I observed had more Arabic speakers, this one had more Chinese speakers. I witnessed a student creating a personal bilingual glossary of unfamiliar terms, much like had been mentioned in our textbook. The synchronicity was neat to observe.

Dr. Ciappetta teaches Composition as well, and used class time to allow students to work on the reading components of their final Composition project, which is to write a research paper. While the students did this, I had the opportunity to view the different methods the students used to accompany their reading. One student utilized the split screen feature on her laptop to take notes while reading, while another annotated the reading directly by using editing tools like highlighting. It was interesting to see the freedom the students had in using the method they preferred.

After the class, I had the chance to talk to Dr. Ciappetta, and learned about the ebbs and flows of CIES registration over the years, including a noticeable drop in quantity of students during the Trump administration. I enjoyed hearing about how politics influence the direction of the CIES program itself.
