John CO #2

Date/Time: June 22nd, 11:00am-11:50am

Topic/Skill: Reading (About Homelessness) with Ryan Flemming in class 3A.

Teacher Presentation: The teacher presented the reading and went over the responses that students gave on a survey. The teacher also presented specific vocabulary that he wanted students to focus on in their readings in the future. The teacher gave activities and also presented the online resources he used to the class if they wanted to learn more outside of class.

Classroom Management: The teacher stands at the front of the class and gave students materials to work on together while he prepared other materials for later in the lesson on his computer. He also walked around, answering questions when needed.

Materials: Computer, Projector, Readworks, Google Forms.

Student Participation: Students went over an assigned reading that they went over in the previous class. The students answer questions on the text to test their reading comprehension and match vocab to the definitions found in the text. Students worked together in pairs for much of the class and spoke to each other in English to practice their speaking skills and communicate effectively. The form they filled out was a survey that consisted of both multiple-choice and written response questions. This survey was not graded but the form had to be submitted by students.

Feedback Provided: The instructor did a great job in going over the correct answer, and explained potential errors when students did not give the correct answer. He also tried his best to give students the opportunity to learn more outside of class with specific resources that may be of help to students in their journey toward learning English.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The way ESL teachers provide detailed feedback on student's ability to use English in reading comprehension. The use of surveys to determine students' progress can give an accurate overview of where the class as a whole is at and what areas need to be focused on in the future. I learned that online resources used creatively can give educators great tools to easily evaluate and quantify their students. I did see that giving time restrictions did not work the best as some students did not submit the assignment on time and even with clear instructions struggled to act quickly. This has shown me that making specific time constraints may not work in my classes in the future as slow students may fall behind.
