Date/Time: June 22nd 10:00am-10:50am
Topic/Skill: Grammer (Articles) with Dr. Angel Rios in class 4A.
Teacher Presentation: Used a whiteboard to say how articles are important based on the context of the sentence. Always kept things short and simple in his explanations so they were easy to understand and also leave a lot of interpretation to the student so they can learn effectively. Gave the students an opportunity to practice with instruction given on any error in a friendly and open manner.
Classroom Management: The teacher Constantly called on the class to answer questions to examples in his lecture so the students are directly involved in the classroom. He also allowed the students to talk out of turn as long as students were on topic and created a friendly atmosphere for communication. He did not hesitate to sit in the rows with the students while they worked, bridging the gap in between student and instructor.
Materials: Microsoft Word, projector, computer, whiteboard, markers, several printed worksheets, pens/pencils.
Student Participation: Students went over a sheet that they have been going over in class. The students went up to the whiteboard to write their answers to example sentences that may contain errors.
Feedback Provided: The teacher provided detailed feedback on their use of articles using examples in context. The teacher also said how different words can work in the same context depending on the person's preference. He always lowered himself to the student when providing direct one on one feedback to seem less confrontational in his activities where students are meant to work independently of the group to reconvene later.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The way ESL teachers provide detailed feedback on students' ability to use English grammar in context. Speaking clearly and concisely is an important skill in presenting English. The value of a homework assignment given to students when worked over during class can benefit students' learning greatly. Using examples in a humorous context drives the point home. One thing I really like was the example he gave had no one correct answer and could be vastly different based on the person giving the answer. In the middle of class, the class was invited to the basement to eat cultural foods from a previous CIES student. Cultural exchange is a wonderful part of learning and bringing students together with so many different people in one classroom.
