John TS #10-11
Date/Time: August 6th Sunday 2:30pm-4:30pm.
Tuttee: Ye-Won.
Location: Hecht House.
Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking.
Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s understanding of sounds in words such as "care" and "scare". I also used the game Hangman as a simple game to help them understand words they found difficult by having them use the book to find key vocabulary. Character names were also corrected as the tutee had difficulty with names such as "serendipity".
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The improvement over the course of the tutoring has been tremendous as the student has been "upgraded" one level in difficulty in books. I think what I have been doing has been working and I am getting a lot better at having the student sound out complex words to say them aloud. I was really happy with the tuttee's drive to read as several times they noted the difficulty they were having but refused to go down in book difficulty which is both because of the confidence I gave them and the topic matter of the book. I chose this first "hard book" for them based on what they liked in their previous books and really found a gem that they really liked. I only got through the first half of the book because I started with an "easy" book for them that was a warmup of sorts. I am excited for the next session(s) in which I will finish the "hard" book and have them do some creative activities to expand on book characters and their importance in stories.
