8-10 Tutoring Zola

This morning I met with Je Ah. I had been having trouble getting her comfortable with generating sentences, so I ended up going with a schema-building activity, to promote familiarity with a topic of conversation. The reading we had done when we had last met had been about a visit to a pet store, so I decided animals would be a good topic to start with, given that she was not familiar with some of the stranger ones, like scorpions. I even re-read Snow's chapter on vocabulary, but it ended up not being super necessary, because she knew most of the words for the animals.

Even though I did not get the opportunity to teach a lot of vocabulary, I do think that revisiting words we had previously discussed was helpful, because when I asked her questions later, she was able to answer them in her own sentences in English, which I was really excited about. For example, we had a short conversation about favorite animals, and if she has any pets.

I liked the results of incorporating extra schema-building, as it helped make her more confident to participate in speaking practice.
