John TS #9

Date/Time: July 17th Sunday 3:00pm-4:00pm.

Tuttee: Stephen.

Location: Hecht House.

Topic/Skill: Speaking and Grammar.

Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s understanding of volume in speech as well as the usage of grammar in writing. My tutee speaks English quietly, making it seem like his English is worse than it is. The tendency to speak quietly impedes my own understanding of his speech and when I reminded him to speak louder, the level of his speech improved drastically. His grammar is still lacking but is not bad for his level. I graded a worksheet he worked on.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that volume is a large thing that may hinder upper intermediary English speakers that have the skills but not the confidence to communicate effectively in English. This can be easily corrected by friendly reminders that have to be given often to try and break that bad habit. The usage of short sentence correction worksheets is a really good way to test the writing and grammar skills of the tutee and does not take long for the student to accomplish. This gives me more time to give more in-depth explanations of their mistakes.
