John TS #7

Date/Time: July 9th Sunday 3:45pm-4:45pm.

Tuttee: Ye-Won.

Location: Hecht House.

Topic/Skill: Reading and Speaking.

Feedback provided to tutee: I corrected my tutee’s understanding of the word "repairing" using the context surrounding the word. I also had the tutee review the importance of recurring characters in a story. The session overall went well and I also demonstrated word games such as hangman that I plan on using in the future to drive home important expressions found in the reading.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that young students that are new to English should have some fun while reading, the student was a lot more focused when given a variety of books to choose from instead of me assigning books I think she would like. I liked it when she related to characters in the stories because it made her more engaged in the story and when asked questions about the reading, she remembered the parts of the book that included her favorite characters. I learned that children have their own biases that affect their reading, while this may be obvious I can see how I can use this to my advantage by focusing my questions on these parts of the book and trying to find more books with similar characters she may like.
