Topic: Dealing with a problem - British Council B2 Activity (highest level they had)
Summary: In this session, I showed her the BC website and had her choose a topic (dealing with a problem) and we worked on that today alongside discussing a critical incident that she has experienced. The activity only had people with British accents as actors, but it was good practice to hear a different dialect and discuss the differences between American and British English. The activity consisted of a preparation activity, the video, and three tasks following it. I let her do the tasks on her own and watched to see if she did well or if needed some help explaining certain things. The topic was good but the B2 level is not challenging enough for her proficiency. We discussed a critical incident that she has experienced, and her experience revolved around asking a girl from culture different than Korean if she was okay or if needed rest. That day she looked tired and YeonHee wanted to show that she was worried about her and cared for her, but after she asked the girl those questions she was offended and thought it was a negative comment. She told me that in Korea it is normal to show your concern for others with these questions and a normal response is, "thank you for caring about me," then they might explain what is wrong with them.
Lessons Learned: This level is too easy for her, but the discussions give us the opportunity to work nitpicking certain errors. I will have to work on finding more difficult resources for advanced students.
