Topic: Speaking - American High School Culture
Summary: In this session, we focused on speaking and I used a vocabulary list that I created to guide our conversation. On the vocabulary list I had words such as cliques, stereotypes, frenemies, and other words related to going to a public high school. She was curious about the culture surrounding public school so I figured I would start with the basics of all the different cliques and how they interact. We went through the vocabulary words I wrote up to see which ones she was already familiar with and which ones she needed to details for. She was able to make connections for a lot of the cliques and stereotypes we discussed to her high school experience as well. One cultural difference we found was that stoners are not common in Korea because weed is illegal there. I found that interesting because it is illegal here as well but it is very common among kids in high school and they have their own clique in most schools. While we talked, I tried to be mindful not to overcorrect but I made sure to let her know of the few mistakes after she was finished talking and explained the reasoning for it.
Lessons Learned: When speaking, sometimes I have to rephrase questions to make them more clear but she is very good at keeping up with the conversation. For the next session, I will create a vocabulary list again of American-specific phrases and perhaps idioms related to high school to expand her vocabulary.
