Tutee: Sandra

Topic: Pronunciation

Summary: I will include the lesson plan from today's session below to fully demonstrate everything we discussed. During this session, we really focused on pronunciation. Sandra's pronunciation is comprehensible for the majority of the time she speaks, but she has expressed a lot of insecurity towards her accent. I re-assured her that accents are nothing to feel insecure about and that the way she sounds doesn't matter as long as people can understand her. However, she requested we take some time to try to improve her accent. During this lesson I introduced her to the English IPA. I told her not to worry about the different symbols but just their sounds. We watched a video together that demonstrates all the vowel and consonant sounds in English and their articulation. Explaining to Sandra the articulation of each sound really helped her and she improved very quickly. Then we applied what she learned to a reading passage. Sandra read the passage and I corrected any incomprehensible pronunciation mistakes and any vocabulary she didn't understand.

Lesson Plan:

Introduction:

  • How are you?
  • How has your week been? Have you done anything interesting?

Warm-Up: Introducing English IPA

Main Lesson: IPA in Context

  • Re-play video, but as we watch, pause and repeat each sound. Then provide example of the sound in a sentence/context. Ask Sandra to repeat the sound and the sentence. Repeat for each sound
  • Read B2 passage together and correct and pronunciation mistakes. Refer to the articulation of the sound to help with pronunciation.

Wrap-Up: Summarize & Assign

  • Review topics discussed and ask if there’s any final questions
  • For homework, assign Sandra a B1/B2 passage and ask her to record herself reading it
    • Emphasize that the recording should be as natural as possible, so don’t worry about re-recording repeatedly
