Topic: The Present Tenses
Today's Lesson Plan:
I am including the lesson plan from our session today to thoroughly demonstrate what we discussed and went over.
Simple Present Tense:
- Introduce the simple present tense by explaining that it is used to talk about habitual actions, general truths, and routines.
- The simple present tense is used to talk about actions that happen regularly or habits. We use it to express general truths, facts, or routines. For example, "I eat breakfast every morning" means that it is something I do regularly. In this tense, we use the base form of the verb with no changes, except for the third-person singular form, which adds an "s" or "es" at the end of the verb.
- Provide examples of simple present tense sentences on the board (e.g., "I go to school every day," "He likes to play soccer").
- a. I eat breakfast every morning.
- They play soccer on Saturdays.
- She reads a book before bed.
- We go to the park on weekends.
- He likes to watch movies.
- a. I eat breakfast every morning.
- Engage in a short dialogue with the student, asking questions and prompting them to respond using simple present tense. Ask her to make example sentence.
- Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in simple present tense: a. She ________________ (study) English every day. b. They ________________ (play) soccer on weekends. c. I ________________ (like) to eat pizza. d. We ________________ (watch) movies on Friday nights. e. He ________________ (go) to the gym twice a week.
Present Continuous Tense:
-
Introduce the present continuous tense by explaining that it is used to talk about actions happening at the moment of speaking or temporary actions.
- The present continuous tense is used to talk about actions happening right now or at the current moment. We use it to describe temporary actions or situations that are in progress. For example, "I am studying for my exam right now" means that I am currently engaged in the action of studying. In this tense, we use the present form of the verb "be" (am, is, are) with the base form of the main verb + "ing" ending.

Present Perfect Tense:
- Introduce the present perfect tense by explaining that it is used to talk about past actions with a connection to the present.
- The present perfect tense is used to talk about past actions that have a connection to the present. It emphasizes the result or impact of the action rather than the specific time of occurrence. For example, "I have visited Paris before" means that I visited Paris at some point in the past, and it has relevance to the present moment. In this tense, we use the auxiliary verb "have" (has for third-person singular) + the past participle form of the main verb.

Present Perfect Continuous:
- Introduce the present perfect continuous tense by explaining that it is used to talk about ongoing actions that started in the past and continue in the present.
- The present perfect continuous tense is used to talk about ongoing actions that started in the past and continue up to the present moment. It emphasizes the duration or length of time an action has been happening. For example, "I have been studying English for two hours" means that I started studying two hours ago and I am still studying now. In this tense, we use the auxiliary verb "have" (has for third-person singular) + "been" + the present participle form of the main verb + "ing" ending.
